Information on data protection at TikTok
You can reach our TikTok page via the following link. Please note that it is not the Studierendenwerk but TikTok that operates this page.
When you visit our TikTok site, a lot happens to your personal data: And it always does - regardless of whether you have made the best possible use of privacy settings on TikTok on TikTok.
Here are just some of the ways in which TikTok collects and uses user data. (To TikTok's privacy policy):
- Tik Tok knows where you are by automatically determining your approximate location (e.g. country, state or city) - even if you have disabled location services for TikTok! (On TikTok it says here: Information we collect: Data you provide: location information")
- Information is collected about how you use the platform, such as how you interact with content and ads you view, the duration and frequency of use, how you engage with others, your search history, and more. What you view, like and share is analysed. TikTok sees exactly what you like! (On TikTok it says here: "Information we collect: Data provided by you‘ And: ’How we use your personal data")
- While you relax on the screen, TikTok trains! The platform continues to evolve - by monitoring interactions and usage across your devices, analysing how the platform is used and training (new) technologies, such as machine learning models (AI) and algorithms. (On TikTok it says here: ‘How we use your personal data’)
- TikTok passes on your data to third parties, in particular advertisers, for a variety of commercial purposes. TikTok earns good money with your data! (On TikTok it says here: "How we share your personal data: Advertising partners")
- TikTok reads when you want to contact us via the platform! The content of the messages you receive via the platform and the associated metadata (e.g. time at which the message was sent, received and/or read and the participants in the communication) are recorded. Nothing is secret... (On TikTok it says here: "Information we collect: Data provided by you: Messages")
- Tik Tok ‘knows’ who you are and what you want to see. Tik Tok uses the data it collects to infer your characteristics (e.g. age group and gender) and your interests. Whether this really applies to you or not, TikTok uses these inferences, for example, to show you further information or provide you with personalised advertising. (On TikTok it says here: "Information we collect: Automatically collected data: Inferred data." And: "Information we collect: Automatically collected data: Cookies.")
Stay in control!
Protect your privacy! Before commenting, sharing, rating or otherwise interacting, please check carefully whether you want to disclose information about yourself and share it with us or other users - unfortunately, this happens very quickly and unconsciously on TikTok!
Please check carefully whether you share personal data with us via TikTok! This applies in particular to data that is confidential and enjoys special protection under the General Data Protection Regulation, such as information about you that reveals your racial and ethnic origin, political opinion, religious or philosophical beliefs, as well as your genetic and biometric data, health data or data about your sex life or sexual orientation. A lot happens to your data, whilst visiting our TikTok site.
You will need time and perseverance to read TikTok's private policy – especially if you want to read the long text on a smartphone screen. If you put the text in a document and use Arial font size 12, you can expect about 21 pages! Some things may be incomprehensible and require you to trawl through further subpages or references (e.g. further relevant information in the cookie policy and terms of use). Quite tedious and annoying! Especially if you want to read the long text on a smartphone screen.
If you understand less after reading than before, you're like many people! That's why we provide you a Video.
You don't need social media to receive our information or get in touch with us!
We will also keep you informed on other channels:
- Website
- App
- Screens in our canteens and cafeterias
